Beach Report 5/16/24

The morning sun went away by the time it was time for my walk. But it was still warm, with a 10-15 kt wind out of the NE that had the Bay all muddy, and seriously disrupted the ability to find teeth in the surf zone.

Only 6 shark's teeth, including this pretty nice Snaggletooth, sadly missing the tip, but otherwise in good shape, and one Drum tooth.

Forget It Jake, It's Baltimore

Hat Hair's Jazz Shaw, Baltimore Dodges Another Bullet, But Only Barely

Yesterday, the city of Baltimore, Maryland held its primary elections, including the Democratic mayoral primary race. Since Baltimore is owned and operated by the Democratic Party, the primary is essentially the general election. Mayor Brandon Scott was in a very tight race against Sheila Dixon, who we have discussed here frequently. She has direct job experience, having served as mayor herself. She also has direct experience in being tossed out of office and being convicted of official corruption. And yet she was amazingly close in the primary polling. The race was finally called at 11 pm and Scott was declared the winner. But there were still thousands of mail-in ballots to be counted so Dixon refused to concede. (Baltimore Banner)
Mayor Brandon Scott is on track for a second term, besting challenger Sheila Dixon in Baltimore’s Democratic mayoral primary.

Scott had a several thousand vote lead over Dixon as results came in Tuesday evening, with more than 70% of precincts reporting, plus results from early voting and a first round of mail-in ballots. The Associated Press called the race for Scott around 11:30 p.m.

“Tonight, you made it very clear that your democracy was not for sale,” said Scott, a first-term mayor who narrowly defeated Dixon in 2020. “I am blessed to have another term to serve as your mayor.”
Brandon Scott is arguably the least corrupt mayor that Baltimore has had out of the last four. He really hasn't gotten himself into very much trouble beyond some campaign finance shenanigans. He can at least boast that he finished a full term without being arrested, which isn't bad by Baltimore standards these days, apparently.

The real question we should be addressing here is how that election wound up being so close. Sheila Dixon's past wasn't ancient history or any sort of secret. Everyone with a pulse and access to a newspaper knows what happened during her mayoral term and the circumstances surrounding her departure. She wasn't the subject of rumors and allegations. She was convicted and sentenced to probation, though she was eligible for jail time. She stole gift cards intended to help the homeless.

And yet somehow nearly half of the Baltimore residents who showed up to vote yesterday voted for her. The kind of scandal she was involved in should have been a career killer for any politician anywhere else in the country. I find it difficult to imagine how she could even show her face in public, to say nothing of file to run for office again. And yet, here we are.

I'm only surprised she didn't win.

Tattoo Thursday

The Coast Guard’s tattoo policy now allows more visible tattoos.

You can now have larger hand tattoos, as well as one tattoo behind each ear.

Of course, all tattoos — anywhere — must still meet content restrictions. Tattoos must not represent racism, discrimination, indecency, extremist or supremacist philosophies, lawlessness, violence, or have sexually explicit content.

The bottom line: The Coast Guard understands that visible tattoos have become mainstream. These updates to our tattoo policy ensure the uniformed workforce presents a sharp and professional military appearance to the public while allowing for individual creativity and expression through authorized body art that is consistent with the Coast Guard’s core values.

Save the Planet, Shower With a Friend, In the Cold

From WUWT, Washington Post: Have Cold Showers to Prevent Climate Change

Clearly we haven’t plumbed the bottom of the well of climate absurdity.
Why you should embrace using cold water, almost all the time

Heating water gobbles energy, leading to higher utility bills and more planet-warming emissions.

By Allyson Chiu
May 12, 2024 at 6:30 a.m. EDT

You may not be giving a second thought to setting your washing machine on the hot cycle, cranking your showers to a steamy temperature or scrubbing your dirty dishes under a stream of scalding water.

If you did, you’d find that you probably don’t need to use so much hot water —
and that you could be saving energy and cutting your utility bills. Water heating is responsible for more than 10 percent of both annual residential energy use and consumer utility costs, the biggest share after air conditioning and heating, according to the Energy Department. An American household uses an average of 64 gallons of hot water a day — close to the amount needed to fill an average bathtub— by doing laundry, showering, washing the dishes and running kitchen and bathroom faucets.

While there are home improvements that can help you cut back on the energy it takes to heat water, including installing a heat pump water heater, one easy solution is to switch to cold water.

“If you’re wasting cold water to get your hot water, then you’re really wasting both water and the energy resources,” she said. “Those energy resources still come largely from fossil fuels, and so they’re adding to emissions in the environment at a time when we really need to be doing everything we can to reduce carbon emissions.”

…Read more: https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2024/05/11/cold-water-laundry-shower-dishes/#
The real question in my mind, how is the climate movement going to top this absurdity? Self flagellation every time you are tempted by machine age transport? Drinking your own pee to save water? Comment suggestions welcome, but please keep them family friendly.

Someone needs to follow up with the reporters to make sure they practice what they preach.

Forget It Jake, It's Baltimore

When it rains, shit pours. Capital News Service, Months after costly civil lawsuit settlement, Baltimore City’s rivers still polluting

In one of his most viral videos to date, with over three million views on Instagram and close to a million views on TikTok, Baltimore crabber and social media influencer Luke McFadden addresses the camera while standing on his boat in the Chesapeake Bay.

“Every time it rains in Maryland, at least where I’m at, we have garbage like this tire that washes down from places like the Conowingo Dam,” McFadden says.

Using his reach pole, he hoists a massive rubber tire from the water and brings it aboard.

“In addition to the trash, we get this lovely brown, foamy slime on the top, which happens to be raw sewage that dumps out from the Baltimore City wastewater treatment plants,” he says.

McFadden then gestures toward the water, where there is indeed a dark layer of sludge instead of a pale blue hue that most would expect.

“The issue we have here in the Chesapeake Bay is a water quality issue,” he says. “You can catch and throw back as many of whatever it is you want, but nothing is gonna live in a stagnant puddle — not one that gets sewage dumped in it every time it rains.”

Posted to Instagram and TikTok just two months after Baltimore City settled a $4.75 million lawsuit for violations at each of its two wastewater treatment plants, the Jan. 21 video combined for over 4500 comments on both platforms.

“Your city tax dollars at work,” one comment read.

“It does stink at the harbor when it rains,” said another.

But the reality is, sewage is supposed to enter the Chesapeake Bay through the Back and Patapsco Rivers only after it’s been properly treated by the plants which happen to be the largest in Maryland.

And as for “raw sewage,” experts say that’s not exactly the case.

“That’s kind of a misconception – it’s still sewage, but it’s partially treated a lot of times because there is such an influx of rain,” Desiree Greaver, project manager for the Back River Restoration Committee (BRRC), told Capital News Service. “We have these rain events where there’s tons of rain, and the plant can’t handle it so they’ll skip certain steps.”

At this point, one must simply conclude that in Baltimore, graft and corruption are much more important to the local politicians than pollution.

The Wednesday Wetness

While recent technological developments have enabled the desalination of sea water to create "clean" water, the process is expensive and limited to coastal areas. Some scientists have turned to Atmospheric Water Harvesting, instead, using devices such as nets to collect dew or "harvest" water from fog.

More recently, however, an AI-enhanced system using a water-absorbing compound called MOF-303 could draw water from the air, even in arid regions. The inventor of the tech, Atoco, has shown off an eye-catching demonstration where a device was able to draw water from the air in America’s arid, sun-baked Death Valley

"Even in arid low-humidity regions, there is moisture in the air that we could use for drinking water or irrigation purposes, but harvesting it cost-efficiently requires advanced materials," Dr Samer Taha, CEO at Atoco, tells Yahoo News.
How does it work?

MOF-303 (the 'MOF' stands for metal-organic framework) is a material that was designed with the help of AI, and is engineered at the nanoscale with a highly complex atomic structure which helps to "trap" water molecules.

It’s an "adsorbent" (as opposed to ‘absorbent’) which means it traps water on its surface and has been designed to have a huge surface within a tiny area. Dr Taha explains: "Known as reticular materials, these substances have surface areas the size of football fields within a single gram of material, maximising their ability to trap and release water molecules.  It makes the kind of water harvesting we see in Star Wars or Dune a reality, unlocking access to water in areas suffering from drought or water scarcity."
Well, I certainly wouldn't mind if they extracted some water from our air in Slower Maryland's muggy summer.
